Crush Complications (but leave me obsessed!)

BLOG POST BY TBC

Them: for a short girl your pride is a bit high.

Me: Give me a second (wears 6inch heels). How about now? I said with a slightly exaggerated bow.

At first, I thought it was because I was female. Which of course plays a part, but I think what plays the only part that counts has to be “who do you think you are?”. Coincidentally that was the question that came to mind before I picked up those 6 inch heels. But the unspoken answer I received was simple, “a god”. I rolled my internal eyes. Created in His own image, yet still fighting to accept ourselves.

Listen, don’t judge… yet

How myopic it is to judge a person’s entire character based off of superficial things like age, color of skin, ethnicity, height. The reason why mathematicians weren’t able to divide anything by one but instead decided to divide one to make half and half into quarter, on and on till they had an infinite 0 is the reason we can’t accept what is. An attraction for complexity, when simple could’ve done it a long time ago.

For one, we’d have spent each day in humble bliss, naked and multiplying. But simple is boring, bring me the jollof and garnish it a little so it’s ‘special jollof’. Hand me the knife, the one for bread. Print out paper and put numbers on it, now we can buy our survival. Anything else and you’re doing it WRONG. For instance, I could’ve gone straight to the point with this piece since the first sentence. But what’s the fun in that?

Life is really simple, but we insist on making it complicated.

Confucius

Let’s complicate things a little…

Why we are so drawn to complications is like asking how we came to be on earth. Can any one really answer that? But when you consider artists like Leonardo Da Vinci with the Monalisa, and how it was birthed during the Renaissance period, it’s possible that complications are just a pathway to growth and ‘sophisticated’ simplicity. Truly, the modern life we enjoy today would not have been possible without the Renaissance. Reason why most philosophers call it the age of awakening. Generally it was a period of cultural, artistic, economic & political rebirth. Diplomacy as we know it, started during the Renaissance.

Which brings me to the next point; Many of us have already accepted ourselves, I mean we live with us everyday. Or at least, while an ongoing process, it’s not a strange concept. Not to mention the numerous articles, posts and others about self love. What we perhaps find hard is accepting others and our part in this God’s green earth. What if to grow, we need to not only accept ourselves but accept other people as well. “I don’t like people.” Honey, you are also ‘people’ to people.

Here’s my point…

It’s the begining of the year, many of us made new year resolutions and are already lagging behind, whereas a few are still giving themselves grace to stick to it. Remember the math breakdown I did earlier? Maybe your resolutions are too complicated and perhaps simplifying your ‘why’ will make it easier for you to become intimate with your goals and rebirth a better you, just like our 15th century heroes did. It’s that depth that makes all the difference. Before the Renaissance was the Middle Ages, known to be a period of darkness, war, confusion & ignorance. Some of us can relate to this internally. Assuming last year was your Middle Ages, wouldn’t it be lovely to be the hero of your life and make this year a Renaissance?

Keep Going, You are Closer than you think

Let me end with this: Did you know? The calendar that has helped our daily life to this day was adopted during the Renaissance after years of conflicting opinions when people (nations, ethnicities, religions) decided it was simpler and beneficial to ‘adopt’ the Gregorian calendar as the universal calendar. Without complication, there wouldn’t be room for growth, we need the confusion to find the fusion (sorry i had to, lol, forgive me! Moving on) It’s okay if you’re a bit unsure about what’s next for you. Do you find yourself answering “It’s complicated” to any question about love or life? Beautiful, love it for you. It means you are closer to the light than you think. You just got to see it.

keep going

In summary, accepting ourselves means extending the same grace to others. Ironically, that is also a form of self love. Wishing you all the best with the new year. Oh and Happy New Year! Better late than never 😉
