Taking the Pressure Off

“Miebi”.

“yes?”

“I asked, red or white wine?”

Miebi had wandered off a bit, not even the smell of the freshly baked pastries in the store could bring her back to reality. Except his voice. The same voice he used to tell her how hungry he was, it didn’t take much convincing to offer to cook him dinner. Des and Miebi have been going out for a while, and she was beginning to really like him. Here we go with the choices again, Miebi thought in her head. This shouldn’t be difficult.

“oh definitely red”

“Good choice” he winked

“Is it?” They both laughed at the inside joke.

Just the day before they had argued about red wine being an aphrodisiac, and she had made fun of how he couldn’t hold his champagne. She decided she was going to make pasta, and went ahead to pick some ingredients. Thankfully the store was beside his apartment, so it was a leisurely walk back once they were done grocery shopping.

Miebi quickly made her way to the kitchen and started with the prep. Everything was going well, until that little voice came back again. ‘what do you think you’re doing?’, ‘you’re going to mess this up’, ‘why did you offer??’, ‘isn’t it too soon??”. 3hours, burnt chicken, no pepper and too much salt later, they ordered in. It was a disaster. The red wine came in handy though.

Maybe it was the pressure of cooking for him for the first time, part of her blamed Des for keeping her company while she cooked, the other the pot, and yet another blamed Netflix and their Young, Famous & African reality series. A text popped up on her phone, it was her best friend.

“Has he asked?”.

“Nope.” Miebi texted back

“Till now? Red flag girl, red flaggg”

Miebi laughing and texting “I don’t think he’s meant to ask, isn’t that old school?”

She looked up and saw Des observing her quietly.

“Who’s making you laugh and isn’t me” he said playfully with a slightly jealous undertone. Miebi laughed again, more puzzled than surprised at his tone. She was also wondering why he hadn’t asked as well, it was just a few days to Valentine’s Day and really it’s not so big a deal she thought to herself.

“what? consider me aged then!” text from her best-friend read. She went ahead and listed 9 reasons why she thought Des was a red flag.

  1. He hasn’t ‘officially’ asked you out.
  2. You both are really in a ‘reelationship’
  3. Val’s day hasn’t mistakenly entered any conversation. Not even as a joke.
  4. He told you he’s traveling second week in February. No specific date, just ‘second week’.
  5. You’re yet to meet any of his friends.
  6. You barely spend time together.
  7. He teases you about your ‘other guy friends’.
  8. He calls you ‘b’.
  9. He has never offered to do or sent you anything whatsoever.

“Err no babe, he sent lunch to my office like twice last week”. Miebi quickly texted back in his defense.

“Okay, that’s 1 out of 9”. All the other reasons are purely circumstantial, there could be good reasons for all of these Miebi thought. Maybe he’s shy, maybe his friends are badly behaved and he’s just saving her the torturous experience, maybe he’s busy. “What should I do then?” She finally asked. After a minute, “First of all, stop making excuses for him!” the text read back. “Secondly, ask him point blank, I mean right now.”

Des offered to refill her glass.

“Just tell me you’re trying to get me drunk.” She teased.

“No b, I just want you to relax, it’s the weekend, no?” That was the last straw, as she heard herself blurt out the dreaded question.

“Why haven’t you asked me out, yet?”

“I thought we were already going out?” Des said laughing awkwardly. Then went ahead to say he wanted her and didn’t think it mattered if he asked officially or not. Then in that voice she liked so much he said quietly,

“Will you be my girlfriend?”

How could she say no? Cheeks bright as crimson she said “I mean only because you asked nicely”.

He laughed, leaned forward and pulled her close. An hour later, she was home scrolling through gift shop after gift shop on Instagram. “One question down, one to go” she texted her best-friend.

THE END.
