The Value of a Gift (And 4 Things that can Diminish it)

12 months ago
the value of a gift

Today on unpacking myths and replacing them with truths. Yes we pack the gift for you and on your behalf (pun unintended but there it is anyway), the thoughtfulness and everything. But you give it meaning. Don’t hide behind a concierge, “After all they curate thoughtful gifts and I’ve heard referrals.” I can almost hear you say. See we’ve done our part and our job… the human element, the emotional connection that ties everything together and gives it depth is You.

So here are 4 things that can diminish the value of your gift that has absolutely nothing to do with the price tag;

1. Suddenly going AWOL or quiet:

We both know your phone is in your hand. The receiver will call you and you’ll be unreachable. We know you’re not unreachable, you’re just uncomfortable with vulnerability. I get it , believe me. There are so many maybes and variables. How do you respond to “thank you for the gift” without it being awkward? What if they didn’t like the gift? I’m here to tell you, it’s not the gift it’s the person. The best thing you can do is be there in that moment with them. Don’t go mute because you’re uncomfortable with vulnerability. Respond to the message, be reachable, pick up the call, be there.

2. Overthinking the gift and being hung up on perfect:

You’ve heard it countless times, there’s no such thing as “perfect”. In fact we like the little messy in between. Makes it more human, more relatable, more this-is my-kind-of-awkward ‘authentic’. Details matter, of-course. However putting too much emphasis on the detail can make you miss the point. The point of every gift is to appreciate the receiver. It is an extension of good will. Always remember that and put them at the focal point. It’s for them, but if they’re not happy you’re not happy so it’s also for you too. When you put them first, everything else falls into place. Perfect has nothing to do with the material or in this case the gift. It’s an illusion. More precisely it’s a feeling. Because like a wise woman once said “beauty is in the eyes of the beholder”. Or was it a man? Either way, I hope you see my point.

3. Not planning well enough:

We can’t call a spade a shovel even though they look alike, so i’m going to be blunt. Last minute gifts are bad. There’s a lot of thought and (good) intentions that go into curating the “perfect gift”. Rushing these things can make you overcompensate, make the wrong decision in a hurry and end up making it just another gift, no connection. So quit the last minute gifting. Plan with your curator ahead of time and watch as they turn even the simplest gesture into something truly wonderful both for you and the receiver. No rush, just good old fashioned intentions. A universe where you get them exactly what they want or darn close.

4. Being on a strict budget:

If you really like someone, it will be more about how you want them to feel and less about the budget. Hold on, hear me out. Imagine you’ve told yourself “I don’t want to spend more than N50k”. Mentally you’ve closed up so you’re not really thinking of the person anymore, but your budget. While budget is important, because of-course you can’t spend what you don’t have or can’t afford, but putting that figure creates a mental constraint so much that you can make the wrong decision. Imagine having no budget in mind, just good old fashioned intentions. Then the world is your oyster and you’d be much more closer to nailing the perfect gift regardless of the price tag attached to it.

If you follow even just two of these guidelines, your chance of giving the perfect gift is high every time. 50k or 50million Naira, all gifts have the same purpose; to foster meaningful connection. And likewise all perfect gifts have a common denominator; You. We have a system in place that ensures our true insiders don’t forget important dates such as birthdays & anniversaries. You too can benefit from this by subscribing to our concierge service. For more about this and to be a part of the movement comment “Yes to meaningful gifts!” and we’d send you the proposal. As always, TBC Concierge is your trustworthy partner in making celebrations easier.

With love,

    My gift budget is based on the love and thought I’ve received from whoever I’m gifting. If it’s been one-sided, or for someone who has overestimated their impact in my life, expect me to be exhibiting 1, 3, and 4. Gifts should be about mutual care, not one-way expectations; in my opinion.

    To me, gifting is more than celebration; it’s appreciation, it’s love. It takes effort, dedication, and money, so it’s reserved for those I truly value because they value me. It’s not just cake; it’s my way of saying I see you, I appreciate you, and I honor all the ‘pouring’ you do. Even if I forget and it ends up being last-minute, I still go all out just as I would if I’d planned it weeks ahead.

      Thank you so much for taking the time to express your opinion. All very valid points. However like I said in point 2 that you missed, the point of every gift is to appreciate the receiver. It should have nothing to do with money in the most literal sense. That’s why not all gifts are tangible. Some are experiential. Also remember the part where I said not planning enough can make it just another gift, no connection? I think that’s where you come in. I hope that the people in your life plan better towards making you happy especially on your special day🤍 No budget, just good old-fashioned intentions.
